Another Blank Slate and A Spinning Head!

The Headmaster and I returned on Monday from Louisiana, where we attended my godson's wedding.  It was a whirlwind trip!

I tried, really tried, to do some fall decorating, but didn't get very far.  So...when we return AGAIN in a couple of weeks, I've got my work cut out for me!  We'll be having an early Thanksgiving up here (WI) for the children here, and Thanksgiving down there (Louisiana) for family there.  Are you keeping up with this?  My head is spinning; in fact, I've awakened a couple of times recently not quite knowing where I was!

Here's what I have so far:

I literally threw some stuff up on the mantel, but am not happy with it, so I will be adding/subtracting.  Here is the blank slate:

I added a piece of autumn leaf garland and a Royal Worchestershire Palissy plate (I love those designs).  A couple of candlesticks are currently there as well, with some little sprigs of fall attached.

The table is kind of set, but I won't get to the centerpiece or finish until we get back.  The table is covered with a drop cloth (as I don't have a table pad, I took two pieces of foam core board and duct taped them together; will also add additional for the leaves!), and my centerpiece will involve a galvanized tray and some tall glass vases which will be filled with colorful dried beans and nuts...maybe some twigs, greenery, fresh flowers, candles.  Oops!  There's the new mirror fresh from Kirkland's!

Chargers are from my favorite resale shop, Julie's; china will be Johnson Brothers' His Majesty.

I've had these cute white pumpkin soup tureens forever, but seldom use them;

I'll use faux antler knives and carving set, combined with Wallace Grand Baroque.

I took my favorite faux bittersweet and wound it through the chandelier.

The sideboard has a new mirror, and buffet lamps on each side.  I took some old candle rings and slid them over the base of the lamps.

I have this wreath, and want to hang it in front, but the mirror sits almost flush against the wall.  Does anyone have any ideas as to how I can hang this?

Another smaller sideboard on one side of the fireplace also awaits finishing.

I did manage to do most of the shopping for the Thanksgiving dinner, so I can concentrate on the decorating, which will, of course, come down on December 1 so that the Christmas decor can go up!  Head still spinning!!

I truly hope all had a great week, and please know that we are constantly thinking of and praying for all of those in the northeast.  We know only too well your plight.  Godspeed to all of you.

  1. Hi Nancy, I just saw your sweet face over at Pam's House of Hawthornes and had to come look you up. Your Fall decorations are lovely...even if you have been gone and busy. If you want to hang the wreath ON the mirror pick up a couple of those command hooks. They come off cleanly when you are done using them and are great for things like this. You can use the over and over again.
I am your newest follower- I hope you have a great night-Diana

    1. Diana: thank you sooooo much for that solution! I tried to put one on the BACK of the mirror, but it wouldn't fit because the mirror is flush w/the wall. It NEVER occurred to me to put it on the front! You've saved the day!!!!!

  5. Hi Nancy, I saw your sweet message on Susan's blog. Thank you for your words of encouragement. I know the rest of the country is struck by what is going on here. NYC has 41 deaths from Sandy, half on Staten Island, including several children: two brothers ages 2 and 4, and a girl, 13. Bodies found floating in homes, or carried blocks away. It is like a war zone. And this was a Category 1, almost a 2 because of the tidal surge. I can't even fathom storms that are 3 or higher. Through it all, I have my faith and proud to live in the United States. xo

  6. While I am enchanted by your lovely brown transferware, I am deeply saddened by Barbara's comment. It's hard to be excited by decorating while lives are forever changed. Two brothers ages 2 and 4 and a 13 year old girl. How do their parents go on? I am sorry, don't mean to diminish your post, which is lovely, but I am having a hard time hearing about this loss. Let's keep all these families in our prayers.

    Much love,
    Susan and Bentley

    1. My prayers are most definitely with those affected in all respects by this horrible disaster. I addressed it in this post (http://theheadmistress1.blogspot.com/2012/10/a-thought-for-our-friends-in-harms-way.html), which only attracted one comment. I understand, more than many, what they are going through. My prayers are, indeed, indicated at the end of this post as well.

  11. Hi Nancy! I was just about to think you had the right idea leaving your mantel bare as we'll be poking up Christmas soon. And then you went and made it beautiful. I love all of your fallen decorating. I've gone a little easy this year, or so I thought, but I've used all my stuff! :)
My best wishes to the newlyweds. Thanks for popping in to see me.

  13. Nancy, it sounds like your travel "crazies" are as wild as mine -- but YOU'VE gotten some Fall decorating done! I can't believe how little has been done here this year. I think I'm just going to go straight to Christmas when it's time because we'll be out of town for Thanksgiving. Skipping Fall decorating is a first for me! I'm glad I could enjoy yours! Thanks for sharing.

    1. Thank you, Susan! The operative word is 'some!' In fact, I think we'll throw up the outdoor Christmas decorations before we leave (we do have a super renter who will take them all down!). I'll have to hustle when we get back to Baton Rouge next week!!! Thanks so much for visiting!

  19. Hey there, Nancy! I have to tell you...you have gotten a lot farther in your fall decorating than I have! I only got to do a little something-something to make the house look good for my tablescaping classes that are held here. It was up for that brief shining moment, and then BAM! Gone! Just like that! I had to hop right into Christmas with them! So no fall decor around here at all except a big old oak leaf wreath on the front door! I really like those faux antler knives. I have searched around here for them at a decent price, but to no avail. My day will come...I hope! :-) Your dishware is beautiful, and I love the neutral pumpkin tureen color! Congratulations to your godson and his family!

  20. My goodness, you have transformed everything into a perfect fall wonderland. Your dishes are the crown jewel. Every time I see those, I wish, but it's not likely I'll ever get them as I would have to put aside the ones that have become part of our Thanksgiving and are used only once a year!
